THE ORGAN IN ST EDMUNDSBURY CATHEDRAL
A large, elevated organ chamber was
created in
the angle between the quire and north transept when the eastern
extension of the Cathedral was built in 1970. The architect,
Stephen
Dykes Bower, also planned the magnificent central tower, which was
eventually built to celebrate the new millennium.
The new organ incorporates pipework from the previous instruments by
Norman & Beard and Nicholson. It speaks primarily to the west,
but is also designed to accompany services in the quire. There are two
new organ
cases based on the architect's original designs: the main case in the
transept facing west towards the nave,
and the second case for the Choir Organ and unenclosed Solo reeds
overlooking the quire, where the
console is also located.
