THE NEW HARRISON & HARRISON ORGAN
IN GLENALMOND COLLEGE
![]() |
Perhaps the foremost of the defining and distinguishing
characteristics of Glenalmond College is its Chapel-centred life,
where a strong musical tradition can be found at the core, with the
organ as its instrumental bed-rock. A blow was
suffered here in the summer of 2003, when the Forster and Andrews organ
of the 1880s was accidentally flooded
whilst the Chapel was being re-roofed, suffering consequent terminal
damage. Working in consultation with Robert Gower, Glenalmond's Director of Music, and Paul Hale, organ adviser, Harrisons have built a new two-manual and pedal tracker organ of 26 stops. It stands in a shallow recess in the north wall of the Chapel. A proper case has been provided for the first time, taking the 1954 design by the architect Basil Spence as its starting point and so complementing his work as seen in the 1960s re-ordering of the Chapel gallery. |
